Easy Homemade Play Dough

If you have a toddler, you probably understand the joys of play dough! This easy homemade play dough recipe is a must-try! It's soft, last for weeks, and non-toxic.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (more for desired texture)
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive)
  • 1 cup water
  • A few drops of food coloring (optional for the looks)
  • Cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice (optional for the smells)

How to Make It:

1. Add 1 cup flour, salt, and cream of tartar to your mixer bowl.

2. In a separate cup, mix warm water, oil, and food coloring if using (or if you're like me just dump everything in the mixer, one less dish to do!)

3. Mix until a dough forms. If it's sticky, add a little more flour. If too dry, add a small splash of water.

4. Remove from bowl and knead by hands for 1-2 minutes until soft and smooth. Slowly add remaining flour if dough is sticky

Notes:

Keep the dough in an airtight container or zipped bag to keep it soft for up to 3 weeks.

Try mixing in (a little) rice, glitter, or oats to offer a new tactile experience.

What Makes this Play Dough More Than Just Fun:

  1. Builds Fine Motor Strength- Rolling, pinching, and squishing strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers needed for writing, dressing and feeding.
  2. Encourages Tactile Exploration- Soft and squishy textures provide sensory input, helping kids become more comfortable with different sensations.
  3. Supports Hand-Eye Coordination- Using tools (like cookie cutters or rolling pins) improves coordination between what kids see and how they move.
  4. Promotes Creativity & Language- Open-ended play encourages imagination, storytelling, and conversation, all important for cognitive and communication skills.
